Get into STEM (GiS) has helped ESH Construction engage 3,500+ students from 105 primary schools across its operational areas providing free resources to support the development of Key Stage 1 learning outcomes, promote careers in construction, and engage children with positive role models. 27 ESH Construction employees have developed their soft skills through structured engagement. GiS is a cost effective initiative which successfully delivers social value linked to £90m+ turnover. |

In 2015, following successful reaccreditation for Investors in Diversity, Vinci needed to regain momentum and shift from awareness to embedding EDI into the way the company works. Key to striving change was engaging the company's leaders. in 2016, the Executive Board decided the company would work towards Leaders in Diversity, using the National Framework to inform its strategy and action plans. This has seen the company evolve a more inclusive culture that leverages the value of diversity. |
FIR Inspiration Award 2017 - Amanda McKay - Balfour Beatty
Amanda McKay has made a positive impact on the industry and the company she works for. She helps develop young people, supporting disadvantaged youngsters with CV writing and has helped a client develop their own programme. She speaks at external events, including Highways England Masterclass and has participated in a Royal Academy of Engineering video on being an LGBT engineer. She leads the company’s International Women’s Day events, is a member of their LGBT and Women’s networks and has used her high profile as a senior manager and leader of her professional body. |
Inspiring Change – SME Award 2017 – David Miller Architects
The judges chose to commend David Miller Architects as they host a stream of week long work placements for school-age and young people to learn about design and construction and the built environment. Each student works on a real client brief and gets access to design, development and technical delivery experience, The team benefits from interaction with a new generation of ideas whilst improving their own individual leadership and communication skills. These, in turn, benefit the whole company and its clients. |
Inspiring Change – Project Award 2017 – Carillion Kier JV - M6 J16-19
In August 2015, the M6 J16-19 Carillion Kier Joint Venture (CKJV) project set a goal to grow and develop a diverse team to support future highways work. The project ambition was to improve the perception of the industry and make construction accessible to all, regardless of gender, social background and academic achievement. The project was awarded National Skills Academy for Construction (NSAfC) status in January 2016. |
